Meet IT guru and philanthropist-Deepak Shikarpur, Saturday 5th June

Deepak Shikarpur is a multi faceted professional. He has been actively working on developing the IT industry in Pune. A renowned writer and popular columnist, this man needs no introduction. An activist by nature, Shikarpur is a devoted Rotarian. Honored with various awards, he has great contributions for several developmental projects.

From a small town boy to an internationally acclaimed professional, how would you describe your journey?

Proper education and right risks taken in life have helped me to be where I am. The sole reason why I am here is because I could enter IT profession way back in 1985. I dont claim to be very successful but as compared what I had dreamt in 1985, yes I have reached somewhere.

You are a multi faceted person, how do you manage to play all the roles in life with such zeal?

Clarity of thoughts and clear time management is what helps me play all the roles with zeal. I decide what to do in life on a daily basis balancing profession, social work and personal life. If you like what you do then you enjoy every bit of it. So I try to do only those things which I like inherently. Money is a by-product not the goal of life. I have seen many professionals from my field who are crazy to earn more dollars and at the end they loose out on many other aspects of life.

You were nicknamed as Turbo Analyst man during your tenure with Tata motors. Can you share those memories?

Those were during my struggling days. I wanted to prove myself in the new venture of my company that I was handling .Life was crazy then. I was working for 16 hours a day for 10 years and travelling the globe trying to prove the credibility of Indian software products.

You have numerous awards to your credit, which of these has been very dear to you and why?

Cosmos award given in May, 2000 and the first Maharashtra state award received in 2007 for my Marathi book has been the dearest to me. This is proof of getting recognised for what I have been doing in life.

Since when are you delivering public lecturers? What inspired you to take up public talks?

Once Late Dewang Mehta had heard me speak in 1998 and he inspired me to take up the cause of promoting IT in local languages. It started as a hobby and soon became integral part of my life.

You have published several books, did this experience had anything new to teach you?

Writing a new book is always an experience. New ideas, new concepts and new audience

What do you enjoy more, teaching, reading or writing?

All of them

There are several eminent people who have inspired you. Do you believe that having such prominent people around makes a difference in ones life? If yes, how?

Yes it makes world of a difference. You keep learning from them constantly. Once you accept that you are not a perfect person and have to improve and learn on daily basis, the job gets easier.

Unlike many professionals, you are keenly interested in enjoying life and do enjoy sports and spending time with friends. Being such a busy entrepreneur, how do you balance your personal and professional life?

After I left a 9 to 9 job way back in 2001, life has changed for me. I do things which I couldnt do earlier. Being owner of ones time makes the balancing process easier.

You are deeply associated with the Rotary club, being one their major donors and winning the best president award. This shows your social side. How much do you believe in contributing for the betterment of our society?

I thing Rotary is the best platform for Community service and networking as well. I got actively involved with Rotary for the past 10 years.

Your dream to make Pune an IT hub has come true. What more developments are you looking forward to in the IT sector?

My dream is true only half way. We have a long way to go and supersede Bangalore. Pune lacks power, public transport and industry friendly attitude of all stakeholders.

What is your take on BPO industry? Will this industry thrive or decline eventually?

BPO is the Best Possible Option according to me. Outsourcing with focus on Global Value Creation understanding the ethos, cultural aspects in addition to monetary gains for both the parties will constantly grow. It wont decline. Demographic Dividend for India will support the cause.

Any advice for young professionals?

Think ahead, dream big and become rich. We should nurture our young talent and shape it like a sculptor to build our nation. Spirituality gives us peace of mind, it never justifies poverty. We need to realize that education is a means to create wealth. Wealth creation by fair means is not a crime. So do strive to become rich, super rich. Once you start earning well, you can do a lot for the upliftment of the underprivileged, and for nation building. Soon you will follow a fair value system in professional and personal life.

Young talent must dream and have aspirations to become great in life. Many successful people in India have become rich and famous, coming from nowhere. If one has the talent and the zest, one can make it.
